Trying to figure out how to make wind turbines at home can get frustrating if you don’t have the right instructions and materials. In this post I’m going to show you what you need to get started in building your own wind turbine.
Turbine Mounting
This is where your blades and motor will sit. Make sure it is strong and can withstand heavy winds. A good piece of 2×4 wood or metal pipe should be able to do the job. You want to make the mount a good length (2 feet or longer depending on the size of the entire turbine) because the tail also needs to go on there as well.
Turbine Blades
These are relatively easy to make; you’ll simply need some PVC pipe. When most people first start trying to learn how to make wind turbines at home they try to make their blades out of wood or some other material but making the blades out of PVC pipe is much easier.
Turbine Motor
This is obviously for your blades to spin on. It will take the wind energy and convert it into energy for your house. You can sometimes find cheap treadmill motors online or your can build a magnet alternator which simply works off of a magnet so it needs no starting power.
Turbine Tail
This is so your wind turbine can face the direction that the wind is blowing; some people leave this out but it makes the turbine much more efficient and it will generate more power this way. The tail can be a simple piece of sheet metal or aluminum, just make sure it’s not too flimsy.
OK, this should get you off to a good start. I’d need a lot more space to go through all of the minor details on how to make wind turbines at home but you can find all of that information in the side bar to the right (videos and tutorials).
